Motivation for the role
For Taylor, the motivation was born out of a desire to bridge gaps within the student body. “I felt that there were areas of friction in the student body, and in my first term, I certainly felt a separation between some parts of the student body, coming like I do from a state school,” he said. Taylor’s manifesto promised to reintroduce the quintessential British cultural fix – tea. “We have already achieved that; we now have hot beverages available at our weekly Welfare tea and biscuits thanks to the new hot water urn.”
Georgia, building on her predecessor’s work, aimed to make a tangible impact on student life. “I saw there were concrete things we could do, like the Valentine’s scheme we ran on February 14. We have lots of ideas for the year.”
Creating moments away from the churn of academic life
Both officers recognise the importance of organising events to bring joy and connection. “It can be so difficult here sometimes, and people are so hard on themselves, so if we give them an opportunity, they welcome it,” shared Georgia.
Achievements so far
Georgia highlighted their plans for welfare swaps, teas, and drop-in sessions. Taylor, with a touch of humour, spoke about the unexpected demand for specific biscuits. “There are just so many biscuits: people email me with requests, and we deliver!”
Apart from the light-hearted approach, the duo emphasises being present for students. They offer tangible support, advocating for those applying for financial aid through initiatives like the Benn Bursaries. Taylor adds, “Sometimes they’re just having a bad day and need to talk to someone or play pool with them.”
Georgia emphasises the role of representing student voices. “We pass requests to the JCR and to the College. We help people so it’s not just them against ‘the system.'”
As Trinity Hall’s new Welfare Officers, Taylor and Georgia are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, ensuring the well-being of their fellow students.
Welfare Tea and Biscuits are available at 2pm every Sunday on the River Terrace.
