Admissions team lead successful widening participation programme

Over the course of the year, 120 students joined residentials at Trinity Hall to experience life at Cambridge first-hand. The series of workshops from leading academics, tours of Cambridge faculties and colleges, and trips to the cultural sites of the city centre gave students real insights into day-to-day life at Cambridge. The residential attendees were joined by Trinity Hall student ambassadors and society representatives from across the Cambridge community and had the opportunity to hear about the personal experiences of students of colour at Cambridge.

“What makes the residential incredibly special is the fact students don’t just benefit academically or in terms of their UCAS applications from the experience, but they also make connections and friendships with others from all over the country, which I hope will continue to flourish after the programme finishes,” said Xanthe Robertson, Access and Recruitment Officer.

Students reported changes in their preconceptions of Cambridge University, learning more about the diverse community it fosters and the support available. Students also reported understanding the application process better and left feeling more confident.

“The residential changed my perspective of Cambridge by showing that it is not going to make me feel like an outsider and that I shouldn’t be scared to apply.” said Jedidiah.

“I see it as more accessible as I have seen people like me and who are as enthusiastic about my subject as me.” said Rhihannah.

Director of Admissions, Dr Marcus Tomalin, commented: “We’ve been so pleased with the level of engagement the programme has received, and the way it has helped – and will continue to help – student’s feel at home at Trinity Hall and within the University of Cambridge.”
