Cheering you on: advice from our sports societies
At Trinity Hall, College sports are an integral part of student life, offering a fantastic way for you to immerse yourself in the College community. With our wide range of sports societies, you can explore new sports or old favourites, and fit in being active around your academic studies. Putting yourself out there and getting involved can be nerve-wracking but our sports societies are here to welcome you with open arms. We spoke to some of our teams to gather advice on what they wish they had known before joining a club, helping you dive into Trinity Hall sports with confidence and easily take to the field – in some cases literally!

The Trinity Hall Orcas
“College sport societies are a good place to try something you might never have had the chance to before, in a friendly environment (and usually for free!)
“A top tip for any society is to bring all your gear for any sports you’re interested in, as we probably have a society for it!
“There is no pressure to go every week!! College sport societies are low commitment and very chill – we usually follow a Sunday morning swim with brunch!”
Trinity Hall Netball Team Co-Captains
Naomi, Georgia and Ollie
“Get involved in College sport as much as you can because it can be really relaxed and low commitment if that is what you need, and if you’re more committed definitely try-out for the Cambridge University teams.
“Whether you’ve played the sport before or not, it doesn’t matter at all at College sport level – it’s all about enjoying playing the sport and I promise you’ll pick up the rules in no time!
“College sport is also a really good way to meet new people and get involved in the College community more, which I think is really important, especially with a college like Trinity Hall where we are such a close-knit community. So try things out and get involved!”
Trinity Hall Basketball Captain
Dulan Abeysundara
“Don’t be scared to try something! There are opportunities at all levels of commitment and ability and it’s also perfectly fine to join mid-season!”
Captain of the Trinity Hall Badminton Club
Beren Griffiths
“Whether you’re an experienced player or it’s your first time picking up a racket, Trinity Hall Badminton Club is the place for you! All rackets and shuttles are provided by the club so all you need to bring is some non-marking shoes (any trainers will do) and yourself. Sports clothes and a water bottle are recommended, but, of course, wear whatever you feel most comfortable in.
“College sports are a great way to socialize and make long-lasting friends with people of all year groups! They are perfect for anyone wanting to feel more involved with College life.
“Just give it a go. If you don’t enjoy it there’s no pressure to come back, but you might just find something you love.”
