Instruments
Organ
A new organ by Carsten Lund of Denmark, was installed in the Chapel in 2006; David Sanger acted as Consultant. It was dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich on 15 October 2006.
Since establishing his firm in 1966, Carsten Lund has gained an enviable reputation throughout Scandinavia for the quality and individuality of his organs, most notable among which are those in the Bragernes Kirke, in Drammen, Norway; St Knud’s Cathedral, Odense; and his magnificent free reconstruction of the 1724 Kastens instrument in the Garnisons Kirke, Copenhagen. His choir organ in Copenhagen Cathedral can be heard every morning on Danish radio in the broadcast daily service.
Expertly voiced by Lund for the intimate dimensions of the College Chapel, the instrument has been met with widespread admiration and has been hailed in the musical press as ‘an organ of rarified conceptual coherence’.
Two acclaimed recordings of the chapel organ, played by the College’s Director of Music, Andrew Arthur, are available from our gift shop.
Harpsichord
The College’s superb double-manual harpsichord was made by renowned English craftsman Andrew Garlick who has been making harpsichords in Somerset since 1974. Examples of his work can be seen all over the world, many of which are owned by well-known performers and are often featured in concerts, radio broadcasts and recordings. Specialising in French and Flemish instruments and employing the best materials, Mr Garlick has achieved a wide, outstanding reputation for the quality craftsmanship, accurate historical detailing, clear tone and fine appearance of his instruments. The College instrument here at Trinity Hall is a testament to those qualities.
Modelled on the famous Jean-Claude Goujon harpsichord of 1749 in the Paris Conservatoire, it offers scope for the full harpsichord repertoire, with its double-manual, five-octave range with three choirs of strings and an attractive ‘buff’ stop.
An acclaimed recording of the instrument, played by the College’s Director of Music, Andrew Arthur, is available from our gift shop.
