Jerwood Library

Our award-winning Jerwood Library is open to Trinity Hall’s undergraduate and postgraduate students, Fellows and staff. It was built in 1998 as an addition to an early 20th-century set of staircases. The library overhangs the River Cam and offers excellent views.

New students should look at our Jerwood Library Libguide for information on how to use the library. There is also a virtual tour of the library.

Facilities

Housed over five levels, the Jerwood Library provides a quiet and comfortable place to study. Our main focus is to provide the key texts for Part I undergraduate courses, though we do also purchase some books for Part II and taught graduate courses.

  • Open to the undergraduates, current graduate students and fellows of Trinity Hall
  • Comprehensive collection of books, eresources and DVDs.
  • Wireless internet access available throughout
  • Beautiful Reading Room is a popular space for quiet study

We are customer-led in our selection and provision of books, and are always extremely happy to receive recommendations from our users.

The building

The Jerwood Library was designed by Freeland Rees Roberts and was officially opened in May 1999 by the Rt. Hon. The Lord Howe of Aberavon CH QC, an alumnus of Trinity Hall. Funded by the Jerwood Foundation it has won a Civic Trust Award and a David Urwin Award for Conservation. In 2019 it was voted the Best New, Refurbished, Extended or Conserved Building in the Cambridge Central Conservation Area since 1969.

The bold design has taken sensitive account of the building’s environment, in particular its position directly on the River Cam facing the Backs, the adjoining 1909 building and the adjacent bridge over the river. The structure is steel framed with a great deal of glazing to take advantage of the exceptional views.

Meet the staff

The library is staffed 9am-1pm and 2-5pm on weekdays, and during Full term it is staffed by the Library Support staff in the evenings 5-8pm, and 2-8pm at weekends.
